Simple Church and Discipleship

Every now and then, someone will tell me,

"We started a Simple Church (a term we use for house churches)." So I say, "Tell me about it. Describe it.” (continued below the picture)

They continue, "We clear out our living room (or have a special room in our house), line up chairs . . . " and I think are getting the picture.

In general, this stage/audience paradigm can be trace back to the emperor Constantine who, when marrying paganism and Christianity introduced 3 major changes to New Testament Christianity.

  • He did away with house churches and moved people into basilicas (the predecessor to cathedrals and where we get our modern day church).
  • He did away with the priest hood of all believers and established a special cast of priests/pastors, giving them the elite job description of a) baptizing, b) marrying, c) burring, and d) dispensing the Lords Supper, also know as communion.
  • He changed the day of worship from the Creation-Sabbath to Sunday.

Depending on ones denominational or faith tradition, some of Constantine's changes may be new or even a bit surprising to you.

I remember when I was discovering some of these things for the first time. If you would like to email me, I can share some of the resources that helped me in my own journey in re-discovering what Jesus had in mind when he talked about discipleship in Matthew 28:18-20:

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
